Most sex pillows are either made from foam or have an inflatable design. “Foam pillows are going to be sturdier, last longer, and hold their shape,” Nekrasova says. “They’re also generally better at having more weight put on them.”
Inflatables may get squishy under pressure, and ideally, your pillow should be firm enough to hold you up without being rock-hard, Nekrasova says. “[Blow-up pillows] also run the risk of being more likely to get damaged.” Still, it’s worth considering an inflatable if you can’t store a larger pillow or don’t want to spend the time pumping one up (especially in the heat of the moment).
Some sex pillows are shaped to provide support in certain areas or make specific positions easier. As you shop, consider how (or with whom) you plan to use your pillow to narrow your choices.
Wedges are popular because they can add more support to positions you do with a partner. For example, the receiving partner can place it under their hips when on their back in missionary or lean their forearms on it during doggy style.
